one of the best hikes in the world

At a glance:

  • this site helps independent hikers organize
  • Misti 5822m one of the easiest high summits in the world if the weather cooperates
  • real risk of altitude sickness
  • should hike Misti immediately after Colca Canyon (Cabanaconde 3287m) or after arrival from Cuzco 3326m or Puno 3830m
  • Lonely Planet trekking guide essential
  • 3 days, 25km circuit & climb
  • May to September are the best months
  • city of Arequipa is the jumping off point
  • carry a tent & minimum 7 litres (7kg) of water!
  • guided or unguided
  • with climbing gear or without
  • 6 mummies found on top in 1998
  • near Machu Picchu, Salcantay & Inca Trail
  • Misti is the perfect mountain climb for independent hikers.

No guide, no fees, no crampons, no ropes, no ice ax.

You can (usually) walk to the top.

Misti is an active volcano. The inner crater has steaming fumaroles.

Technically easy, your adjustment to high altitude is the crux of this climb.

The landscape is bleak & beautiful. You feel alone though Arequipa is just the other side of the peak.

Interested? Our recommended route has you circuit the volcano by 4WD, on foot & by public bus.
